100 Million Pennies Displayed
More than a few piggy banks were broken along the way, but Rockefeller Center in New York City is currently displaying 100 million pennies — that’s $1 million worth of the copper coins.
Called the Penny Harvest Field, hundreds of public school children showed up in Rockefeller Center when the display was unveiled Monday. The exhibit is 30 feet by 165 feet — longer than a city block — and was coordinated by Common Cents’ 17th Annual Penny Harvest, a non-profit organization that teaches children the value of contributing to society. More than 800 schools spent a month collecting pennies, and the money will be donated to the schools’ charities of choice.
Some nickels and dimes slipped into the exhibit by mistake. It will be on display near Rockefeller Center’s famous Christmas tree until the end of the year.
